Border Collies are special dogs for special people. Misunderstanding of this specialty can lead to far-reaching consequences for both an owner and a dog. Some people abandon their dogs because they can no longer handle them. Whatever the true reason might be, the Border Collie ends up in a shelter, confused and depressed. However unpleasant it may seem to carry on someone's responsibility, this could be a great chance to have a loyal friend.

It is of the utmost importance to realize that the Border Collie is not a nice toy for children to play with and requires baby-sitting when necessary. Therefore, families with children under 10 are advised to think twice before making up their mind to take a rescue Border Collie. Find out why the dog was abandoned. It is far from being the hallmark of all rescue dogs, but some of them might have some behavioral problems. In Border Collies, for instance, it can be nipping hands, clothes, pursuing cars or running children.

Most odd behaviors are correctable and only need persistency and patience. Consult the prior owner, if possible, or a rescue group volunteer to acquire the information on possible problems exhibited. Be ready to ask a specialist, in case you can't handle the problem on your own.

You may need a spacious fenced yard for a Border Collie. Seeing that it's a very active dog, make sure it will get along well with other pets in your house. It might be advisable to avoid contact with cats, especially if it caused problems in the past. However, you can't predict what your dog will be like until you really own it. Adopting a rescue dog is an important undertaking and when answering the questions in an application form, be totally honest. Border Collies are great dogs and deserve great loving owners.
