Border Collie Dog

The Border Collie Dog was created in England for the sole purpose of herding sheep. Though the history of the breed is long, it was officially recognized only in 1915. All major canine breed clubs recognize this breed as Herding, Working, or Pastoral dogs. Official recognition means nothing for true breed fanciers, because they admire the intelligence and working abilities of the breed, but not its conformation, while in show quality purebreds, the talents of the dog are secondary to their correspondence to the breed standard.

The Border Collie Dog is still widely used on farms for its primary task: driving and protecting sheep. These dogs are very agile, endurable and intelligent. In their work with sheep, they use the wolves’ tactic. They catch the eye of a sheep that should be driven back to the herd and assert dominance over it. The Border Collie is able to make decisions when the master is not around. This breed is able to work at night and in any weather.

There are many breed clubs and associations that promote working abilities and talents of the breed. They organize sport events and activities for purebred dogs to determine the best herders. The Border Collie is good at agility, conformation, tracking, obedience, and other dogs sports. Dogs of this breed are quick to understand what is expected from them. They enjoy being in the center of attention.

Anyone who buys a Border Collie Dog should keep in mind that dogs of this breed are very dedicated workers; they cannot be left without a task to do. If not used for herding sheep, a Border Collie needs several hours of active play and mental exercise a day. A Collie is not the breed for indoor living and sedate lifestyle. This breed makes poor guards and personal protectors, but it’s good with children and smaller pets that can be “herded.” A Collie is a good companion for sport, especially jogging and hiking. It gladly accompanies older children in their plays. The Border Collie Dog can be taught to play ball and Frisbee, fetch a stick, and perform funny tricks.
